Bald Eagle: Haliaeetus Leucoephalus
"sea eagle with white head"
Random Facts: The Bald Eagle is the only eagle
unique to North America. Once paired, Bald Eagles will mate for
life. Since Bald Eagles are opportunistic feeders and never know
when their next meal will be, they have an adaptation called a
"crop". A crop is an enlarged area in their esophagus
where they can store large amounts of food. An eagle with a full
crop can survive for 5 to 7 days without eating.
Endangered: Has recently been taken off the
endangered species list on June 28, 2007, but is still protected
under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle
Protection Act.
Habitat: Bald Eagles live along the coast and
on major lakes and rivers where they feed mainly on fish.
Food: A Bald Eagles diet consists of 90% fish,
but will eat almost anything it can catch such as ducks, wading
birds, turtles, rodents and snakes.
