Cougar:
Puma concolor
Random Facts: The cougar is the largest wild
cat native to North America. A reclusive cat, it generally avoids
people. A cougar can jump upward of 18 ft. from a sitting
position. They are more closely related to the common house cat
than to the four "Big Cats": Tiger, Lion, Jaguar, and
Leopard. After a cougar is finished eating its prey, it will bury
the carcass with leaves and debris and save it for another day.
Cougars have also been highly admired in mythology and culture.
The Inca city of "Cusco" is reported to have been
designed in the shape of a cougar and the animal also gave it's
name to both regions and people. The Moche people often depicted
the cougar/puma in their ceramics, and the sky and thunder god of
the Inca, Viracocha, has been associated with the animal.
Endangered:
Habitat: In Canada, they are mostly found in
BC, Alberta, and sometime the Yukon. Sighting have been reported
in Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.
