Moose: Alces Alces Random Facts: The moose is the largest "deer". It can run up to 35 mph, and easily swim 10 miles. In late fall a bull's antlers will fall off and new ones will grow. The word "moose" comes from the Algonquin Indians. They called this strange looking creature "mooswa", which means "twig-eater" or "the animal that strips bark off of the trees". Unfortunately moose like salt and as a result thousands of moose are killed every winter on our highways attempting to satisfy their craving. Endangered: Moose are endangered, and in certain parts of the country their numbers are dwindling drastically. Their population has declined over 20% in the last 30 years, due to over-harvesting of their habitat, illegal hunting, climate change, and parasitic brain worm. Habitat: Moose live in dense mixed forests that contain lakes, bogs and streams. Food: Moose eat fresh leaves, twigs, willows, aspen, maple, birch, fir, watershield, yellow pond lily, and pondweed. |
