The wolf parent is one of the best animal parents in the world. The mother stays with the pups for weeks after they are born. As the pups grow older they start exploring their world. Baby wolves are about one pound each when they are born. The number of babies is usually 5 but can be as many as 14! About twelve days after they are born they open their eyes. By the time they are two weeks old they may come out to the entrance of the den. They learn to hunt when they are three months old. All the wolves in the pack help to take care of the pups. Endangered: Yes. Illegal killing of wolves has now become a threat to their survival. Habitat loss is another threat to wolves because humans are moving into the environment. By the time they were put on the Endangered Species Act, they had been exterminated by the lower 48 states, and now only inhabit Minnesota, Alaska and Canada. Habitat: Grey wolves are found in forests, the tundra, plains, the desert, and mountains. Food: Wolves usually prey on hoofed animals such as deer and elk, but also prey on smaller animals such as rabbits and beavers. |
